I think here are few problems.
1) We don’t have good trainers. It is hard to say it. I am not saying that i can solve IMO problem, but What m trying to say is that, even the teacher who train us to go to IMO cannot garantee to solve most problem in IMO. How abt student who has been trained by him? Will they be able to solve? Less likely….. And barely speaking as a past IMO contestant for Cambodia, the training i got was what I regard as USELESS and wasting time.

2) We didn’t select the right people. As far as I know, Teacher sokha who is responsible for it, always choose those who passed grade 9 to train. Unfortunately not all the students that were good in grade 9, will be good in grade 12. And surprisingly, even though they did not pass smart student National Examination , they still can go.

Here are a solution i suggest.

One of the good idea is to learn from the countries who did well.
Why not we look at the selection procedure in for example Singapore.
Here is the link : http://sms.math.nus.edu.sg/Simo/Selection_Flowchart.pdf

2. Fidele - ខែកក្កដា 21, 2009

We can’t entirely blame the trainer since our government doesn’t very much focus on providing trainers with necessary materials to train the chosen candidates.😀

3. Vatey - ខែកក្កដា 22, 2009

I feel regret bout this!!! Well I think Jupiter’s opinions are great, I agree. I think we should train the students who pass the out-standing students exam in grade 12 not grade 9. It seems crazy, isn’t it? Otherwise, students don’t have enough time to focus on the exam. Let’s have a look through this year time table. The students have to have IMO competition and just after 3 days they’re coming back, they’ll have a national exam here. Everyone will choose to focus more on the national exam cuz it’s more important!!
So the solution is that the government should focus on the smart students problem, try to do things that make them easy to consider, plz don’t put too much pressure on them….🙂

phal sovannrath - ខែកុម្ភៈ 4, 2012

wooow……..i agree with ur opinions……. good !

4. jupiter - ខែកក្កដា 22, 2009

agree….. All trainer want their student to did well.

5. jupiter - ខែកក្កដា 22, 2009

Another point is that, we must base on experience. The most contest a person takes, the more experience he has absorb. Sometimes in IMO one student compete more than 2 times.
For example, the best of Japan : Makoto Soejima, has attended 4 times in IMO.
One of the best of Germany : Peter Scholzt also 3 times….
But to do so, we must choose student since they were at grade 10 or 11 sth. That is why perharps we need do IMO selection test which open to all grade. Just like Singapore Mathematical Open. But the problem is money and corruption.

Since I don’t know much about this, I seem to have no idea to exchange…dizzy nas…let’s government do the rest tov…he tied-he solves.

ឺwell, after participating in IMO, I was so regret with my poor result, sorry everyone! That was the reason of the creation of this math group! This group was made to boost and help next generation in Math competition especially IMO! So, I found some reasons that we couldn’t achieve good result:

1.The way we select the candidates is not good enough! Only those who were outstanding in grade 9 can be selected, who know they can be as good as they were in grade 9? As I kno, only 50% of the Cambodian IMO contestants passed the 12th grade outstanding exam! Though it might not be a poor selection, why don’t we just motivate those who try to be outstanding in grade 12 have chance for IMO team selection test? As far as I know, many students who weren’t success in grade 9 try even harder than those who do! Then all students will try hard together!!! Moreover, why don’t we give some chances to students who are outstanding since grade 10 or 11? They may even better than some in grade 12! Also, if they are selected, they will have enough experiences and get good result some time soon!

2.Information of IMO should be spread more, thus students can have enough preparation for it! Some outstanding students don’t even know what IMO or APMO is! So how can they prepare for it? usually, some only know a few weeks before APMO! Then they just randomly prepare for it which is n.th most of the time! Such standard needs more pratice! What if they know and prepare since 10th grade or even longer than that?

There are more, comment later…

strongly agree .. sth must be changed but can it be changed before next selection?? smey, you’re thinking of reporting it to de government, right?? support!!

9. Monypich Sou - ខែកក្កដា 30, 2009

Yeah sure….It should be……I hope that Cambodian Math Student will be the best math candidates over the world….~_~
We are Cambodian,So we have to do everything for our nation…

All,
I am glad to hear the excahnge on how to improve the competition result.
I would like to see more discussion about the improvement of knowledge (mathematics in this case).
What should we do, especially at the early stage, to prepare Cambodian student for the completion?
